Whiteboard Paint | Questions

Welcome to the FAQs for Smarter Surfaces Whiteboard Paint.  Below we have outlined the answers to the most commonly asked questions.

General

To ensure a perfect whiteboard finish, please :

  • Undercoat with a primer (this will smoothen the surface and ensure that Smart Wall Paint stays on the surface rather than being absorbed into the surface).

  • Be sure to use a different roller for both the primer and the Smart Wall Paint. If you choose to use the same roller, the water involved in washing the roller will have damaging effects on the whiteboard paint.

  • Only paint the specified coverage area as clearly labeled on the tin. Stretching the paint will affect the whiteboard performance.

  • Note this is a one coat specialist coating, to ensure optimum results we recommend rolling over the surface ten times during the coat.

Once applied correctly, the award-winning Smart Wall Paint comes with a ten year performance guarantee.

Kit contents include: a high quality roller handle and sleeve, sanding block, gloves, application guide, wet paint sign and a Smart Sponge.

Smarter Surfaces has its origins in the environment. Our first product – the award-winning dry-erase paint, Smart Wall Paint – was invented specifically to eliminate whiteboards and flipcharts from offices and classrooms all over the world.

Sales of Smart Wall Paint all over the world today mean that we have eliminated the need for over one million whiteboards which would have ultimately ended up in a landfill.

Since then, our product range has expanded into four collections which each add functionality to surfaces: magnetic, projector, dry-erase and some products which offer more than one functionality.

We continue to invest in research and development to maintain our place at the cutting edge of functional surface technology.  As well as transforming walls and rooms into collaborative spaces, our products are also safe to apply and safe to work in. That’s got to be good, right?

Q: Can it be used in a child’s room?

A: Yes, all our products exceeds all EU safety regulations (and therefore exceeds global standards).

Application

Please consult the technical data section above for information on our MSDS sheets.

Q: Do I need to wear personal protective equipment ?
A: Use the gloves supplied in the kit while applying Smart Wall Paint. In addition, safety glasses should be worn. As with any painting process, ensure the room is ventilated.

Q: Is Smart Wall Paint flammable?
A: Smart Wall Paint is not flammable. Smart Wall Paint has a flash point above 70 degrees celsius / 158 degrees fahrenheit.

Q: Can Smart Wall Paint be applied on any surface?
A: Smart Wall Paint can be applied to almost any smooth surface including plaster, wallboard, glass, metal, concrete, wood and plastic, as long as the surface has been sealed before application. If you are using Smart Wall Paint White, it is essential to prime the surface first with Smart White Primer or any good quality water based white primer. If you are using Smart Wall Paint Clear over an existing coloured surface, we recommend you use Smart Wall Paint Clear Sealer for best performance.

Q: Why should I apply primers / sealers before applying Smart Wall Paint?
A: Primers and Sealers help give a surface a smooth finish. Secondly, they act to 'seal' a surface. This means that when you apply Smart Wall Paint on a surface that has been primed / sealed, the properties within our whiteboard paint will stay on the wall rather than be absorbed into the wall. In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on wipe-off functionality.

Smart Wall Paint White works best when applied over a white surface, it is essential to use a white primer before applying Smart Wall Paint white.  Smart Wall Paint Clear can be applied over any colour, except for white as it may tinge the wall. For best results use Smart Wall Paint White over a white surface.

Q: Can I paint onto glass?
A: Yes, for a white finish apply Smart Wall Paint White Primer first. For a transparent finish, apply Smart Wall Paint Clear directly to the glass.

Q: Can I paint onto wood?
A: Yes, ensure that the surface is smooth before application, fill any holes with a filler and then apply Smart White Primer/Clear Sealer prior to applying Smart Wall Paint White/Clear. Sand after each coat of primer/sealer and re-apply primer/sealer as required

Q: Can I paint over wallpaper?
A: Yes, for a white finish apply 1-2 coats of our White Primer. For a clear/transparent finish use 1-2 coats of our Clear Sealer if the wallpaper is quite porous. Smart Wall Paint is not suitable to be applied over a textured wallpaper.

Q: Can it be used outside?
A: Yes. Our product has been tested to withstand temperatures up to minus 16 degrees celsius and is UV light (ultraviolet) resistant. However, the area should be sheltered and dry to ensure best performance. Please note Smart Wall Paint should not be stored for an extended period of time below zero.

Q: Will the walls yellow in sunlight?
A: Smart Wall Paint is used in very hot climates all over the world including the Middle East and Australia. UV resistance means that interior surfaces with Smart Wall Paint will not yellow, even in the hottest conditions.

Q: Can I use it on floors?
A: Smart Wall Paint has not been tested for slip resistance and as with any painted finish it could wear according to the traffic on it. Our performance guarantee is as a dry erase paint and does not extend beyond that.

Q: Can I use Smart Wall Paint to repair an existing dry erase / whiteboard?
A: Smart Wall Paint is an ideal dry erase repair product for most surfaces. Smart Wall Paint can be applied directly onto existing whiteboards without any primers, just ensure all marker residue has been removed. For blackboards, we recommend you wipe the surface down with a damp cloth to remove any old chalk. Next, coat the blackboard with Smart Wall Paint White Primer. To complete, apply Smart Wall Paint.

Q: Can I project on to it? – Will there be a reflection?
A: Smart Wall Paint can be used as a projector surface although it was not designed for this purpose. Many of our customers use Smart Wall Paint as projector surfaces both for education and business. If you notice a 'hotspot' on the surface, simply re-angle your projector to eliminate it. If you require a high-performance projector surface we recommend using Projector Paint. If you are looking for a surface with both projector and whiteboard functionalities, choose our Smart 2-in-1 Wallcovering: Projector and Dry Erase

Q: Can Smart Wall Paint be applied on any surface?
A: Smart Wall paint can be applied to almost any smooth surface (glass, metal, concrete, wood, etc.). If you are using Smart Wall Paint Clear over an existing coloured surface, we recommend you use Smart Wall Paint Clear Sealer for best performance. If you are using Smart Wall Paint White, it is essential to prime the surface first with Smart White Primer or any good quality water based white primer.

In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on-wipe-off functionality.

Q: What type of heater can be used to speed up the primer's drying process? Can an infrared lamp be used?

A: A normal fan heater can be used to speed up the drying process. An infrared lamp can also be used but it can’t be placed too close to the surface.

Magnetic Paint

Q: Can I use a magnetic paint under Smart Wall Paint?
A: Yes, we recommend using our Magnetic Paint or our Magnetic Plaster for a stronger magnetic surface.

Q: Can I paint over Magnetic Paint or over Magnetic Plaster with whiteboard paint?
A: Yes. applying Smart Wall Paint on top of Magnetic Paint will result in a writable whiteboard surface which is also magnetic. Choose our Magnetic Plaster to get a stronger magnetic whiteboard surface.

Smart Wall Paint can be cleaned with any Xylene based cleaner.  This can be easily found in DIY or motor stores. Please note, this is not suitable for removing Smart Wall Paint from skin.

Usage

Smart Wall Paint is designed to be compatible with all good quality whiteboard markers. For the best compatibility, we recommend purchasing markers available from our web store as these have been tested for optimum compatibility with Smart Wall Paint.

Q: Can I use permanent markers?
A: No, like any regular whiteboard, Smart Wall Paint is not compatible with permanent markers.   If permanent markers are used on Smart Wall Paint we advise using our Permanent Ink Remover to remove.

Q: What if I use a permanent marker?
A:  It may be possible to remove a permanent marker by writing over it with a whiteboard marker. This will 'wet' the ink again, thus making it easier to remove. Wait two minutes, then wipe off. If this fails to work, use Permanent Ink Remover available from our web store. This is a specialised cleaner designed to remove stubborn stains and ghosting from whiteboards and whiteboard painted surfaces.

Your Smart Wall Paint surface can be wiped clean with a Smart Sponge or a regular dry or slightly damp cloth (a Smart Sponge is supplied with every Smart Wall Paint kit). For easier cleaning, you can also use any standard Whiteboard cleaning spray . For tough or stubborn marks, we recommend customers use our Permanent Ink Remover .

During the first 30 days from application we recommend cleaning your surface every day using the supplied Smart Sponge. After 30 days it is recommend to thoroughly clean the surface weekly with a standard whiteboard cleaner

Q: There are ‘shadows’ or large areas of marks on my surface, what can cause this?
A: This is likely due to either improper application or the paint has been "stretched" over an area larger than advised. The Smart Wall Paint application guide must be followed for all applications. The paint is formulated specifically to cover the area specified on the kit and cannot be stretched to cover an area greater than we recommend.

Q: There are ‘shadows’ or large areas of marks on my surface, how can I fix this?
A: We recommend you try our Permanent Ink Remover on troublesome areas of your surface. This is an extremely high performing product which is not suitable for daily cleaning.
If you would like advice on any issue, please email a picture of the affected area, along with your order number and total surface size (in square meters) to support@smartersurfaces.com

Q: Can I use alcohol to clean my Smart Wall Paint surface?
A: Continued use of alcohol on Smart Wall Paint may deteriorate the integrity of your surface and reduce performance. We have designed our range of cleaning fluids to provide the best cleaning results while maintaining the quality you expect from your Smarter Surface. You can see our full range of cleaning products here

If you wish to remove or repaint over your Smart Wall Paint, simply sand down the area, apply Smart White Primer or a good quality water based white primer, and paint as normal with standard paint.

If you are using Smart Wall Paint Clear over an existing coloured surface, we recommend you use Smart Wall Paint Clear Sealer for best performance. If you are using Smart Wall Paint White, it is essential to prime the surface first with Smart White Primer or any good quality water based white primer.

Q: Why should I apply primers / sealers before applying Smart Wall Paint ?
A: Primers and Sealers help give a surface a smooth finish. Secondly, they act to 'seal' a surface. This means that when you apply Smart Wall Paint on a surface that has been primed / sealed, the properties within our whiteboard paint will stay on the wall rather than be absorbed into the wall. In summary, using a primer or sealer means you will get a smoother surface with optimum write-on-wipe-off functionality.

Q: What type of heater can be used to speed up the drying process of the primer? Can an infrared lamp be used?
A: A normal fan heater can be used to speed up the drying process. An infrared lamp can also be used but it can’t be placed too close to the surface.

If permanent markers are used on Smart Wall Paint we advise using our Smart Pro Cleaner to remove.

Q: What if I use a permanent marker?
A:  It may be possible to remove a permanent marker by writing over it with a whiteboard marker. This will 'wet' the ink again, thus making it easier to remove. Wait two minutes, then wipe off. If this fails to work, use Smart Pro Cleaner available from our web store. This is a specialised cleaner designed to remove stubborn stains and ghosting from whiteboards and whiteboard painted surfaces.

Q: What type of magnets can be used with Smart Magnetic Paint?
A: Neodymium magnets should be used with all Smart magnetic products. Each Magnetic Whiteboard bundle includes at least 2 Smart Neo-Magnets (the largest kits come with 10 Smart Neo Magnets).
Note: ordinary household magnets are not suitable.

Your Smart Wall Paint surface can be wiped clean with a microfibre eraser cloth or a regular dry or slightly damp cloth (a microfibre cloth is supplied with every Smart Wall Paint kit). For easier cleaning, you can also use any standard Whiteboard Cleaning Spray. We recommend customers use Permanent Ink Remover to remove stubborn stains

Q: There are shadows/ghosting on my surface, what might have caused this?
A: This is likely due to either improper application or the paint has been "stretched" over an area larger than advised. The Smart Wall Paint application guide must be followed for all applications. The paint is formulated specifically to cover the area specified on the kit and cannot be stretched to cover an area greater than we recommend.

Q: There are ‘shadows’ or large areas of marks on my surface, how can I fix this?
A: We recommend you try our Smart Pro Cleaner on troublesome areas of your surface. This is an extremely high performing product which is not suitable for daily cleaning.
If you would like advice on any issue, please email a picture of the affected area, along with your order number and total surface size (in square meters) to support@smartersurfaces.com

General

You can apply Blackboard Paint using a brush or a roller. For best results, we recommend using a foam roller.  Apply Blackboard Paint over a primed or previously coated surface.

Each tin of Blackboard Paint covers up to 4 sq. metres (43 sq. feet) with two coats.

Q: What surface can I apply Blackboard Paint onto?

A:  Blackboard Paint is suitable for use on plaster, wallboards, wood, metal, plastic and concrete. For indoor use only.

For step-by-step instructions, refer to the application guide below.

Application Guide

Once applied to your wall, you should condition your blackboard surface by rubbing a piece of chalk all over the surfaces and wiping off with a dry cloth or duster.

Q: What accessories can I use to write on my blackboard surface?

A: Your Blackboard Surface can be used like a normal blackboard. You can use standard chalk and chalkboard markers to write on your surface. Chalkboard markers are wet-erase and can be cleaned off by using a damp cloth.

Q: How should I clean my blackboard surface?

A: You can use standard blackboard dusters to clean your surface on a regular basis. Like all blackboards, regular use will cause a build up of chalk dust on your wall. To remove excess dust, you can clean your Blackboard Surface with a damp cloth. Please note, you should wait one week after applying your Blackboard Paint before using a damp cloth on the surface.
